With early firearm deer season upon us, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) would like hunters to know that about 50 deer check stations will be open to check harvested deer this season. Please remember by bringing your deer to a check station it allows the DNRE to collect data that assists with the management of Michigan ’s deer herd.

The DNRE will collect biological data for generating deer population estimates at the administrative Wildlife Management Unit, as opposed to the Deer Management Unit level for the second year. The DNRE will only collect heads for TB and CWD monitoring from deer that are identified as “suspect” and for systematic sampling from the known areas of concern, which include the five counties of northeast Lower Michigan, plus Iosco, Shiawassee, Cheboygan, Emmet and Kent Counties . These changes significantly reduce the number of deer the DNRE will need to check, which will be equal to the amount of effort the DNRE can afford to expend on this activity.

For a list of 2010 deer check stations open during the Regular Deer Firearm Season (November 15-24th and November 29-30th for 2010), please visit the DNRE website at www.Michigan.gov/dnre and click on Natural Resources. During all other deer seasons, deer can be checked at the Operations Service Centers (OSC) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (except state holidays). In the nine Township CWD surveillance zone in Kent County , where deer check is mandatory, there will be several locations open for deer check throughout the deer seasons. Those locations can also be found online.
